About us

Welcome – Aloha

Ka Leo O Nā Hula, AC is a civil association founded in Mexico in order to: “To preserve the customs and traditions of Polynesia through their dances, legends, history, language and crafts.”

Started in 1990 as a result of the concern of a group of five teachers from Mexico when they perceived that there were many people interested in the dances of Polynesia and their concern to make sure they kept the traditions as true to the original of each culture.

From this came the idea of Ka Leo O Nā Hula, AC to organize lectures, seminars, festivals, trade, cultural trips, etc.. The greatest interest was focused on inviting teachers mainly from Tahiti Hawai’i to share their culture directly.

In 1990 the Earl Maikahikinapamaikala Tenn. kumu hula (Pamai) visited Mexico City to provide the first hula exclusive basic class: heke ipu touch and footwork and hip. He also taught dancing kahiko and auana. Since then Pamai has taught basic choreography seminars, always emphasizing the importance of the basics or fundamentals of the hula.

Ka Leo O Nā Hula, AC, from its inception to the present, has focused mainly on the culture of Hawai’i and organizes an annual seminar hula festival since 1991.

Pamai is the co-founder and director of the Association and direct link between Mexico and Hawaii. Patience Namaka Bacon, daughter of Mary Kawena Pukui, a prestigious and renowned academic who worked hard and for many years in preserving the culture of ancient Hawai’i has also come to impart his teachings for several years

Other important teachers (experts in hula, language, lei making) that we have visited (in chronological order) are: Lovina Lependu, Jan Yoneda, Melvin Kahōkūloa Lantaka, Nani Lim Yap, Tutu Lydia Hale, Joshua Daniel Lorraine, Aunty Mary Lou , Aunty Paulette and Bill Char. In Tahiti we visited the teacher Lily Tanematea.

Each year various events are organized in Ka Leo O Nā Hula, AC being the main seminars, festivals and hoi’ke (presentations) in Mexico City, Puebla, Cuernavaca and Guadalajara. Great emphasis is placed on the seminars that teach basic hula kahiko and auana choreography, leis making, oli technique and Hawaiian culture in general.

It also performs the annual festival where schools are called to share their knowledge and a jury of Hawai’i assesses their progress and make comments to improve their level. Since 2007 the event of seminar-annual festival has spread to the cities of Puebla and Guadalajara.
